01 — The work

Fast hands. Straight lines.

Read enough of the reviews and the same word keeps surfacing, from people who have never met each other. Fast. Fast and efficient. In and out quick. He did a great job and he was fast, which we both appreciated.

In most trades that word is a warning. Here it is the compliment, because it arrives attached to the other half of the sentence every single time — the cuts are always perfect, his cuts are more then great, every cut is precise and clean and exactly what I ask for.

That combination is not luck and it is not a shortcut. It is what a practised hand looks like: no hesitation, no second-guessing halfway through a fade, no twenty minutes of small talk while the clippers idle. You get the cut you asked for, and you get the rest of your day back.

Elvis has been cutting since high school. He would finish class and go straight to the barbershop — not for a job, for the practice. A few years working under someone else earned him his master license, and by the time he left that shop he was managing its floor.

The private studio came a few years after that: his own room, his own name, and appointment-only from the first day. It is still run that way, and the name now travels a good deal further than Lamberts Lane.

02 — The standard

Three things, every chair.

i

The line-up is straight

It is the first thing anyone notices and the first thing that gives a barber away. It gets cut in sharp, every time, on every service — including the $15 shape-up.

ii

The price is the price

Every figure is published before you sit down, down to the $5 eyebrows. Nothing gets added at the register and nothing gets quoted differently once the cape is on.

iii

Your time is yours

Booked slots run on time and they run short on purpose. Speed here is a service, not a corner — 116 people have said so in writing.

03 — The room

Where it happens.

Shot in the chair, not staged. The light you see is the light you'll sit in.
